South West Regional Development Agency

The current Regional Innovation Strategy (Adobe Acrobat Reader Document - 287.92kb) (RIS) evolved from the 'Innovation and Technology Regional Frameworks for Action'. These set out the region's aims to increase quality, effectiveness and coherence in its work to promote innovation and improve the competitive position of South West England. 
 
Since the RIS was launched, innovation has become an increasingly significant element in Government policies and initiatives to maintain and grow the UK economy and there has been a renewed commitment to supporting science and technology as an economic driver.  
 
The increased emphasis on innovation, nationally and regionally, provides an opportunity to take stock of what we have achieved and consider how to move forward. In benchmarking our progress against the Regional Innovation Strategy, we can see that we have made significant progress towards the aims and objectives we set for ourselves. But much clearly remains to be done and the challenges for the South West from global competition and the pace of technological change remain.
